A24's 'Elden Ring' Adaptation Heads to AFM as Most Expensive Film on Sale
The fantasy video game adaptation, with a budget approaching $200 million, will be the biggest-budget standalone project ever offered at a film market.
A24's adaptation of the popular video game Elden Ring is heading to the American Film Market (AFM) in Los Angeles. The film is set to be the highest-budget standalone project ever put up for sale at a film or TV market, according to Deadline. Sources cited by Deadline indicate the budget for the project is between $175 million and $200 million, closer to the latter figure.
Amazon has joined the project, which stars Kit Connor. The film is an adaptation of the 2022 video game developed by FromSoftware, co-written by George R.R. Martin. Alex Garland is both writing and directing the movie, with Martin also on board as a producer.
This Elden Ring film, with its nearly $200 million budget, is A24's most expensive movie to date. Their previous most costly production was Marty Supreme, which had a budget of approximately $70 million. Filming for Elden Ring concluded in July 2026, following its announcement in May 2025.
The premise of the film follows a Tarnished warrior on a quest to restore the shattered Elden Ring in the Lands Between. Confirmed cast members include Kit Connor, Cailee Spaeny, Ben Whishaw, Nick Offerman, Tom Burke, Havana Rose Liu, Sonoya Mizuno, Emma Laird, Peter Serafinowicz, Jonathan Pryce, Ruby Cruz, and John Hodgkinson. The movie will be shot for IMAX and is expected to premiere on March 3, 2028.
This is a big swing for A24, and the scale of this project, along with its star power and director, makes it one to watch for video game fans and film buffs alike.
