Spotify announced on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, that it has removed more than 50 million tracks identified as AI-generated “slop or spam” from user recommendations over the past year. This move is part of an ongoing effort to highlight music created by human artists on the platform. The company also confirmed that its editors apply the same standards and do not feature content identified as “slop or spam.”

This figure is in addition to over 75 million “spammy tracks” Spotify removed entirely from its platform for rule violations, a figure initially reported in September 2025. Spotify indicated a “marked decrease in listener concerns” about such content appearing in recommendations since these changes were implemented.

To identify AI-generated content, Spotify uses a combination of listener engagement and feedback, upload patterns, metadata, and information from third-party AI detection tools. The company acknowledges that AI detection technology faces limitations and will become more challenging as generative AI advances. Tactics Spotify targets include mass uploads, duplicates, SEO manipulation, spammy playlist networks, and artificially short tracks.

Spotify has introduced an “AI Credits” feature, allowing artists to disclose when AI was used for roles or instruments on a song. Artists are submitting “tens of thousands” of these credits daily, which appear in Song Credits on mobile. The platform has also launched an “AI Persona” label for artists who use an artificially created identity, and these personas do not appear in Spotify’s editorial or algorithmic recommendations by default, unless a listener chooses to follow one.
