On November 1, two-time Irish Olympian Ciara Mageean died at the age of 34 after battling bowel cancer, her family announced. Mageean, who represented Ireland in track and field at the 2016 Rio and 2020 Tokyo Olympics, had shared her diagnosis in July 2025, revealing she had started treatment.

She later disclosed that she had stage 4 bowel cancer, a diagnosis she received on May 20 after noticing changes in her bowel movements. Mageean, who got married weeks before her passing, spoke about the challenges of facing the disease at a young age, telling RTE in an interview in June, "Because I'm so young and healthy, I thought I'll be at an early stage. Not that any stage of cancer is okay."

Tributes have poured in from the global athletics community. The Olympics' official account commented, "We are devastated to hear about this loss to the world of sport." World Athletics, the sport's international governing body, described her as "A fighter on and off the track."

Mageean made history as the second person to win an individual European title for Ireland, securing the women's 1,500 meters race at the 2024 European Athletics Championships. She expressed gratitude for the support from her family, friends, and the Irish nation throughout her career and her cancer journey.
