The Spring 2027 collection from Nkwo Lagos, titled “Journey to Less,” takes inspiration from a 40-day road trip. Designer Nkwo Onwuka's nephew traveled from Amsterdam across 13 countries to her village in Southeastern Nigeria, influencing the collection's themes.

Onwuka’s goal for the collection is to create sustainable fashion solutions that reduce waste. She aims to shift the relationship with upcycled fashion, proposing a “reverse retail” system where people can send in old garments to be transformed into new designs. This approach encourages using existing wardrobes instead of discarding items to landfills.

The collection features upcycled denim converted into dresses and skirts. Several indigo looks were produced locally in Nigeria’s dyeing pits, and blazers were repurposed. Shirts with lattice details were inspired by the mapping systems used during her nephew’s journey. Onwuka also worked to introduce more commercial pieces, making the designs accessible beyond highly artisanal items.

A new brand emblem, a desert bug known for extracting moisture from the air, appears on several pieces. Onwuka explained that this creature, which survives in harsh environments, represents the brand’s story of finding ways to thrive from minimal resources.

This collection offers a compelling vision for how fashion can be both creative and environmentally responsible, moving beyond traditional retail models.
