Los Angeles voters are heading to the polls to choose between Mayor Karen Bass and City Councilmember Nithya Raman in a closely contested race. The latest Berkeley IGS/L.A. Times poll shows the two candidates in a dead heat, with 20% of voters still undecided, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Raman, described as a technocrat aligned with the Democratic Socialists of America, launched a late bid to unseat Bass. Bass, 73, has been on the defensive following her handling of the Palisades fire, which destroyed homes and caused fatalities. Raman, 45, has criticized Bass as an ineffective leader, pointing to the fire response, the homelessness crisis, and issues with city services like battered streets and sidewalks. Raman also highlighted the unfinished SkyLink people mover at Los Angeles International Airport, which is years behind schedule and billions over budget.

Bass, in turn, has criticized Raman for changing her positions on issues such as police hiring and the city's mansion tax. All 14 of Bass's City Council colleagues have endorsed her, with some expressing distrust of Raman. Bass also accused Raman of neglecting constituents in her Hollywood Hills district, stating she has handled complaints there for four years.

The next mayor will oversee Los Angeles during the 2028 Summer Olympic Games, an event that carries national security and financial risks for the city. The new mayor will also face ongoing challenges with homelessness, which has seen rising numbers after two years of reductions, and will negotiate new contracts with city employee unions, including the Los Angeles Police Protective League.

This election is about more than just who leads the city; it's about the direction Los Angeles takes as it prepares for the Olympics and tackles critical issues like housing and infrastructure.
