The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and 20 states, including California, have filed a lawsuit against Dollar General, accusing the national discount retailer of a long-term deceptive pricing scheme. The complaint alleges that Dollar General routinely charged customers more at the register than the prices displayed on shelves, price tags, and in advertisements. This practice has reportedly resulted in millions of dollars in overcharges for consumers.

According to the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection director, Christopher Mufarrige, Dollar General "betrayed the trust of millions of American consumers" and caused "significant financial harm" to struggling communities. Dollar General operates over 21,000 stores across the country, with 75% of Americans living within five miles of one. The company has historically positioned itself as a low-price alternative to larger retailers.

Regulators claim that corporate leadership at Dollar General was aware of the issue but allowed the mislabeling to continue. Between January 1, 2023, and March 31, 2026, over 29,000 complaints were filed by consumers across the 48 states where Dollar General operates, all claiming the company failed to honor advertised prices. The lawsuit states that despite these complaints, Dollar General did not implement new policies or safeguards to protect customers.

The complaint highlights that Dollar General's customer base often includes low- or fixed-income households, described by CEO Todd Vasos as those who "run out of money before the month runs out." The FTC argues that these practices violate the FTC Act and other state laws. Filed in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee, the lawsuit seeks a permanent injunction against Dollar General and monetary relief for the plaintiffs.

This national lawsuit has a direct impact on Californians who shop at Dollar General, especially those in underserved communities where the retailer is often a primary option. It's a reminder to always double-check your receipts.
