What is it? The Vansza Knu Skool Mule is a backless version of Vans' chunky Knu Skool sneaker, known for its oversized 90s-inspired look. It keeps the thick outsole, puffy tongue, padded collar, and large 3D Sidestripe, but removes the heel section, turning it into a mule, according to Side Kicks. The shoe features a black suede upper and custom artwork by Sage Adams on the footbed, according to Vans.
Who is behind it? SZA, who was named Vans' Artistic Director in 2025, designed the shoe. She stated that she wanted to create pieces that are comfortable, functional, and expressive, whether on a trail or in the city, according to Oneness Boutique. SZA also mentioned her preference for easy-on, easy-off styles, saying she designed a step-down shoe and then removed the back of the Knu Skool for more accessibility and comfort, Sole Retriever reported.
When and where was it released? The Vansza Knu Skool Mule "Black/White" was released on October 22, 2026. It is available through Vans, select retailers, and secondary market sites like Flight Club and GOAT. SZA made special in-store appearances ahead of the launch, including one at Vans Glendale Galleria in California on October 17.
What else is in the collection? The Knu Skool Mule is part of the VANSZA Drop 1 collection, which also includes the Authentic Knockdown and an apparel capsule. A second drop, VANSZA Drop 2, is scheduled for April 8, 2027, and will feature the LX Tabi Hiker and a RealTree camo Knu Skool.
